Ingredients

  • 4 cups thinly sliced potatoes (russet or Yukon gold)

  • 3 tablespoons butter

  • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour

  • 1½ cups milk, warmed

  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese (or a cheddar–mozzarella blend)

  • ½ teaspoon salt

  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper

  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder (optional)

  • Pinch of paprika (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease a baking dish.

  2. In a saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter. Whisk in the flour and cook for about 1 minute until smooth.

  3. Slowly whisk in the milk, stirring constantly, until the sauce thickens.

  4. Add salt, pepper, garlic powder, and stir in half of the cheese until fully melted.

  5. Layer the sliced potatoes evenly in the prepared baking dish.

  6. Pour the cheese sauce over the potatoes, making sure all slices are coated.

  7. Sprinkle the remaining cheese on top and add a light dusting of paprika if desired.

  8. Cover with foil and bake for 40 minutes.

  9. Remove foil and bake for another 20–25 minutes, until bubbly and lightly golden.

  10. Let rest for 10 minutes before serving.

Tips

  • Slice potatoes evenly to ensure consistent cooking.

  • Freshly shredded cheese melts better than pre-shredded.

  • Letting the dish rest helps the sauce set before serving.
